Art museum housed in a National Romantic granite building designed by Gustaf Nyström and opened in 1904; the museum presents a panorama of art from iconic works of the Finnish Golden Age to recent contemporary art and stages frequent temporary exhibitions and public programmes. The museum’s collection is owned and administered by the Turku Art Society and comprises over 7,600 works, with particular strengths in the turn-of-the-20th-century Finnish Golden Age, Finnish surrealism and pop art, and a notable collection of self-portraits; parts of the collection are shown in rotating collection exhibitions and loaned internationally.
